Name This Horse!!

We rescued a horse. She's been here for almost two weeks now, and we keep calling her 'the new horse'. We have to decide on a name - so I decided to ask for some help!

Here's the background -

She's a 24 year old mare (girl). She was a broodmare for much of her life (she had lots of babies). She was born in Missouri. She was starved at one time, and was found eating her own manure (poop) with her newborn baby at her side. She is an Appaloosa. Her coloring is a brown roan - it looks like brown over white, with faint spots. She loves to be sprayed with water. (Really, it's hysterical). She's headstrong, which probably means she has never had a ton of training. But she'll do whatever you ask her to do. I had 2 students on her last night, bareback. I do not think she would ever kick or buck.

Her name was Fancy. But she's not Fancy. Because she's an Appaloosa, my son suggested calling her Apples. (horses love apples, too). I also have thought about Lily (our ranch is named Valley Green, so she would be Lily of the Valley), or Dusty (thinking about keeping the 2 syllables with a Y at the end), or Brownie (warm and sweet and brown).

What do you think? We are open to any and all suggestions!
Your choice of either free knitted acorn from Woolies, or a free Admit One Cat, or scrabble tile pendant from Buster and boo, if we choose the name you suggest~!

She's gorgeous!

I'd love to call a horse Apples. Lilly also sounds great.

How about Sophie - she looks like a Sophie to me.

Lacy?

I like Lacy, too. I was going to say Maud (breaking with your ending-in-Y idea). Maud is a strong name, and this lady has had to be strong. Plus I like weird names. :-)

Goodonya for rescuing her.

She's from the "Show Me" State (MO). I think that the name Shomee (pronounce showme) would be really cute. =)

the white on her reminds me of surgar or stars as in (Galaxy) or clouds as in (Cirrus)[cirrus clouds are characterized by thin, wisplike strands, often accompanied by tufts, leading to their common (non-standard) name of mare's tail.]
or Daphne, Jane, Venus

Feigie (it means 'little bird' in Yiddish) is a name that fits her, in my opinion. She seems like a lovely horse.

My daughter likes American girl books. She just finished reading Kaya. She is a native American from 1764. She had a horse named Steps High. Then Steps High had a baby named Sparks Fly. I have to admit, I like Showmee too.

I like Rusty Girl since her color is a little rusty. Just call her 'Rusty'. She is one lucky horse to have you now!

"Lucky Star" The name popped into my head immediately before I read her story. This Mama horse is now a star on the internet. I just loved reading about her, Woolies!

I've only had one horse back riding class and I LOVED being around horses!

Give her a carrot for me.

How about Sundae? Brown syrup over white ice cream? Both are sweet.

Cheers!

Misty!
Because she likes to be sprayed with water, aand she has a beautiful misty coat. She also has a bit of a mist-erious past. :D

She should be named Ingot. Because she's tough, she's flexible, she's been through the forge a bit, and had new things made of her. And she's still solid. Go, go, Ingot!:D

She really is a lovely old dame.

She's so cute!! You are lucky to have her.

I love 'Apples' too but I suggest full name should be Brown Sugar Apples (a fav dessert of mine!)....just call her Apples for short.

She is so beautiful! And what a survivor. I am so happy you rescued her! Thanks for sharing her very sad story. I am so glad it has a happy ending, she deserves it!

I love symbolism in naming...i would want to look at the Nez Perce language, as that is what Appaloosa is from.

Here is a page about the language
http://www.nezperce.com/npedu13-2a.html

maybe a combination of:
horse (s'ik'em)
appaloosa (m'a min)
mother (i s)

perhaps "mother appaloosa" would be pronounced Is-ma-min ? That is a bastardization, of course, but i love the symbolism. It could be shortened to "Izzie" or something else cute, if you are into that.

I used to have an Appaloosa named Windy. Her full name was Windy Poco Cavennaugh. She used to love kicking up her heels in the snow, similar to what your mare does with water. She was a dirty white with brown spots...we got her when she was older so the white was getting darker.

Good luck in finding a name...I know it can be a challenge.

What an amazing story, thanks for sharing! Hmmm...how about -Rain Baby? Because she likes being sprayed with water (so that's kind like washing away all the old poo-poo memories for all her new loving memories; and then baby because she had so many babies and now it's time for her to enjoy life by starting over with a wonderful new family and life!).

How about Gracie? If she can go through all of that and still have fun in a shower, she must be full of Grace!

She is absolutely beautiful.

I just love her...you are wonderful for taking her in. I love all your name choices, especially Lilly of the Valley (my favorite flower)...how about Lilly Belle

I couldn't believe the scenario you painted on this lovely lady! We adopted a TB off the track who they said was 14 YO. Turned out she was 26! We didn't purchase her at the time, but several months later found out that the owner just put her in a bare paddock..no food or water. We quickly adopted her and she became known as Stroller..don't know why either but she was marvelous. Some things just work out that way! I'd go with a feminine name..Lily of the Valley is pretty nice.

Update: Really pathetic, she still doesn't have a permanent name. My son, who is away (and came up with the name Apples) insists that is her name. She and Belle, my other mare are having herd wars, and each showing the marks. Dozer is enjoying the women fighting over him.
sigh

awww....poor old girl!! if you're still looking for names, i'd probably call her Sweetie; she has been through it but still sounds like a wonderful horse! and she just looks...sweet!

of course, i also like the name Lily. :)

I probably would call her Mama, because she has had a lot of foals and that's what she is. But I call all of my broodmares mama. I'm glad she will have some ease in her life.
